When flood damage strikes, the results are usually far too serious for property owners to handle on their own. Professional restoration services like those provided by SERVPRO of Garden City/Hempstead help to return a home back to the way it was before a flood. But many fear the costs and responsibilities associated with a full-scale restoration project. Unfortunately, few if any of the unpleasant consequences inherent in flood damage disappear without appropriate care and attention. To prevent long-term adverse effects from developing in your home or business, call for help immediately.

Here are two of the most serious problems that can develop when professional drying is delayed:

  1. Weakened Foundations

Long-term exposure to standing water and the additional moisture that’s produced during flood damage events can cause permanent and expensive damage to the very foundation of your home. Even the solid materials that foundations are made of, whether masonry, concrete or stone, can soak up small amounts of water through the cracks and pores in their material. Unless these pockets of water are removed, they can create defects in the building foundation that eventually weaken the entire structure. In the winter, water trapped inside those cracks will expand as it freezes, resulting in very serious structural issues that will be incredibly expensive to fix.

Fast and thorough drying processes are the only way to protect your home against these threats. SERVPRO of Garden City/Hempstead has the specialty equipment that’s designed to remove all unwanted moisture.

  1. Mold Growth

Mold grows wherever there’s a lot of moisture, such as around leaks in roofs, around windows, or pipes, or where there’s been flooding. It can grow most anywhere, but especially where it finds food, such as on porous surfaces like paper, cardboard, wallboard and wood. Mold can also grow on many nonporous materials such as concrete and brick. And with the right temperature, moisture and food, mold will grow most anywhere. A rolling stone may gather no moss, but one sitting still sure can. Preventative treatments can help, but the only reliable solution to developing mold problems is rapid drying and dehumidification that SERVPRO of Garden City/Hempstead offers.

Add to those two problems the fact that water, often called the universal solvent, can slowly dissolve, break apart and destroy most of the materials in your home or business and you can see why you need to call SERVPRO of Garden City/Hempstead immediately should you experience a flood or water damage of any type.

Preventing Water Damage - inside and out! Call SERVPRO of Garden City/Hempstead! 516-620-4579

6/29/2022 (Permalink)

Costly and disruptive water damage can come from inside your home or business, or outside. The good news is that you can take some basic steps to prevent a water disaster from occurring in the first place.

Prevent Water Damage from the Inside

  • Inspect hoses and faucets. Check hoses to water heaters, dishwashers, washing machines and refrigerator ice makers annually. Replace any that have cracks or leaks, and replace all hoses every five to seven years.
  • Inspect showers and tubs. Check the seal and caulking around showers and tubs to make sure they are watertight.
  • Check pipes. Look closely for cracks and leaks and have any damage repaired immediately.
  • Shut off the water supply to the washing machine if you’ll be away from home for a week or more. You should never leave the house while the washer or dishwasher is running.
  • Know the location of the main water shut off valve in your home. A water disaster happens fast, but if you know how to shut off the main water supply, you will save time, money and stress.
  • Install a leak detector. This will give you an early warning and precious time to respond to a leak.

Prevent Water Damage from the Outside

  • Caulk and seal windows. A tight seal will guard against water leaks during storms or downpours.
  • Inspect your roof. Look for missing, damaged and worn shingles.
  • Check your downspouts. Remove debris from downspouts and rain gutters. Position downspouts so that they direct water away from the house.
  • Install gutter guards. Gutter guards help to prevent clogging so that water can flow easily from the roof and away from your home.
  • Check sprinklers and irrigation systems. Be sure sprinklers and irrigation systems aren’t damaging the walls and foundations of the house. In winter, turn off and drain outside faucets to protect against frozen pipes.

Have water stains on ceiling? Call us to help identify the cause of the water stains. 516-620-4579

3/22/2022 (Permalink)

It is not uncommon that water stains will appear on the ceiling of your home or business. In this blog we will discuss the causes and solutions to this unsightly problem.

Common Sources:

Whether is a roof, upstairs bathroom, or leaky pipe, you should be able to identify the cause of the water stains fairly easily. It’s also not uncommon for water to run along rafters or piping before dropping onto the ceiling, obfuscating the true source of the problem. Old caulking is another common source of water seepage. Piping or a shower pan that has come into disrepair is a possibility as well. Your pipe could have a leak or may just be sweating from inadequate insulation, which was discussed in another blog post. Pipes could be old and need to be replaced or hard water could be causing premature damage to pipes. If the water stain is coming from the roof you need to identify the nature of the disrepair. It may not necessarily be a leak as there are many causes when the roof is involved. Consider upgrading your insulation and not necessarily your roofing. If you choose to contact a roofing contractor, the more information you can provide for them the better.

Water Stain:

You must make sure the water or moisture problem is corrected before attempting to fix the stain or damaged drywall/plaster! If the water continues to seep or leak all of your hard work will have been for nothing.  Only when you’re positive that the problem has been solved should you proceed to fix or remove the area containing the water stain. A professional handyman can assist in this project fi you feel it’s beyond your capability. If the stain is purely cosmetic, get some stain-killing primer before repainting the area.

Deal with it:

The worst possible thing you can do is ignore the water stain! Clearly there is an underlying issue that needs to be addressed before any more damage occurs. If you deal with the stain and the underlying issue promptly you avoid a more costly repair in the future.

Tips on how to avoid sewer backups!

11/29/2021 (Permalink)

A backed up sewer can cause thousands of dollars in damage. Preventative measures, proper maintenance, and knowledge of what causes sewer backups are all ways to ensure that this is never a problem you have to deal with.

Sewer Maintenance:

Your sewer lateral (the pipeline in the street between the city sewer main and the building) is your responsibility to maintain. A cracked or eroded line, or one in which tree roots have grown though can allow groundwater to seep into the system. Contact your insurance company to inquire about available coverage options.

Causes:

An aging sewer system as well as the amount of homes connected to them contributes to sewer back up’s, flooded basements, and overflows. Some pipelines combine sewer and storm into the same line which exposes the line to more volume than it can handle. Tree roots seeking moisture may find their way into the sewer line causing cracks or blockages. In this case, the cost of the clean-up would fall into the tree owner’s responsibility.  Depending on the situation the city may split the cost with the property owner. Sometimes a blockage in a city sanitary main can also cause a back up to occur. If you see seepage at floor drains this could indicate a problem with the main and you should contact a plumber for further assistance.

Prevention:

To prevent backups from occurring, be sure to properly dispose of grease and cooking oils. Washing these substances down the drain could cause blockage as it cools. Dispose of them in a proper container. Paper towels and other paper goods should be properly disposed of as well, not washed down the drain. Maintain tree roots in your lateral by having them cut by a professional service.

If a sewage backup does occur, disease, destruction of property and valuables, and even electrical malfunctions are likely to happen if the issue is not handled correctly. We here at SERVPRO of Garden City/Hempstead are always available to assist in the proper cleanup of a sewer backup or answer any of your questions!

Water Damage? Don't Delay Drying! Call SERVPRO of Garden City/Hempstead

3/4/2021 (Permalink)

What If I Have Water Damage in my Home?

10/9/2020 (Permalink)

Contact SERVPRO of Garden City/Hempstead to Perform Water Damage Restoration in Your Home

A water leak in a confined space like a crawl space is a sign of a severe upcoming problem. The slightest amount of water in your crawl space should be investigated due to the significant consequences it may cause to your property. However, if you engage with professional restorers within 48 hours, we can mitigate the damage.

Why should I engage with professionals that fast?

Water and moisture continue ruining a home the longer they remain in it. Therefore, it is essential to contact SERVPRO of Garden City/Hempstead as soon as you can to perform water damage restoration in your home. Our team can use effective water restoration techniques to prevent additional damage.

How do I know there is water damage to my property?

Do not wait until you see mold under your carpet or smell a damp odor in your property. The following subtle indications should ring a concern.

  • Increased monthly water bill
  • Switch off all your faucets and listen if there are any sounds of running water.
  • Check if your water meter is ticking over even after switching off all taps.
  • Look for any overflows in or outside your property.

The faster you repair a leak, the less damage that can occur in your property. Materials like drywall and flooring can weaken if they remain exposed to water for lengthy periods. It can be challenging to locate the source of the moisture in confined areas.

At SERVPRO of Garden City/Hempstead, we have excellent equipment and tools that help us get access even into confined areas. We look out for structural hazards before we proceed with water damage mitigation and restoration.

How can you dry my home?

The drying process is essential in water damage restoration. We speed up the process by using our advanced equipment. We can use desiccant dehumidifiers to dry the area. The machine produces the driest air with low vapor pressure to increase the evaporation rate. Desiccant dehumidifiers are the most suitable drying equipment to use when the temperature in affected areas is below 60°F.

A water intrusion incident in your property can affect your family’s health and cause severe damage to your property. Contact SERVPRO of Garden City/Hempstead at (516) 620-4579 to restore your residence to the preloss state. We’re Faster To Any Size Disaster.

Why Should I Use a Professional Restoration Company After a Flood?

9/3/2020 (Permalink)

Our Knowledgeable SERVPRO Team Oversees Your Project from Start to Finish

Water damage in your home is a serious issue. No matter how diligent you are during your cleanup, it can still be challenging without proper knowledge, professional equipment, and products. Floodwater is black water (contaminated), making it even more challenging to remove safely. The last thing a property owner wants is for potentially-dangerous black water to remain behind after a flood, potentially causing long term issues like strong odors and mold growth. Professionals like our SERVPRO team take care of your disaster situation, helping to alleviate some of your stress.

What Should I Expect from a Professional Restoration Company?

SERVPRO Uses Knowledgeable Restoration Specialists for Flood Cleanup

Our experienced water damage technicians have the knowledge and expertise to create an individualized cleanup plan for your home based on your home's amount of damage and structure. Our team members have the Institute of Inspection, Cleaning and Restoration Certification, making them well-equipped to handle your unique situation. For instance, floodwater in your basement presents a different set of challenges than floodwater in your living room. In the basement, you are more likely to have more than two inches of standing water, requiring a submersible pump with the ability to lift water out of your home.

What Types of Professional Equipment Does SERVPRO Use for Extracting Floodwater?

  • Portable extractors including a built-in heater, pump, and vacuum system to effectively remove water and rinse clean the impacted areas.
  • High-velocity centrifugal air movers direct air across the impacted area an angle. Technicians use multiple air movers, placing them every 10 to 16 feet across the wall.
  • Technicians position dehumidifiers around the impacted area to deliver dry, warm air around the room while removing excess moisture.

Three Steps You Need to Take When You Have a Pipe Break

2/1/2020 (Permalink)

If you are a homeowner, you likely know how to prepare your house for a hurricane, tornado, or even hail, but what should you do when you have a supply line break? Water in your home can be incredibly damaging, and if it is your first experience with a supply line break, you might be shocked at just how much flooding and water damage there is to handle. Fortunately, no matter how much experience you have with water in your home, there are three things you can do to handle a flooded home after a supply line break.

1. Stay Calm
If you come home to a flooded home, it's normal to panic. Try not to. Instead, remain calm as you face the problem of water in your home. Water cleanup, mitigation, and drying performed by your home restoration company will ensure your flooded home is returned to its normal state, but panicking won't make this happen faster. Remember that people around the globe have dealt with water in their flooded home. You, too, can handle this.

2. Get to Safety
When you have a supply line break, you might be tempted to try to fix it yourself. Keep in mind that a break is nothing to face on your own. Water in your home can quickly become a hazard, so it's important that you leave the area with water damage as quickly as possible. Water damage isn't simply structural. When you have a pipe break, the area becomes prone to mold growth and insects, as well. A restoration company can handle water cleanup, mitigation, and drying.

3. Call SERVPRO of Garden City/Hempstead
Your home may have flood damage after a pipe break, but a restoration company can help with water in your home. Flood damage can manifest itself visibly, but you may also have structural damage that a home restoration company can notify you about after mitigation, water cleanup, drying, and restoration. While the flood damage in your home might seem impossible when it comes to water cleanup and drying, the truth is that your restoration expert has seen this problem before, and he or she is fully equipped to handle this situation.

No homeowner wants to deal with flood damage, but unfortunately, flooding does happen. If you find yourself in a situation where you have flooding or a pipe break, remember that you are not alone. Your home restoration expert is ready to help you with mitigation to prevent flood damage from happening to you again. SERVPRO of Garden City/Hempstead will work with you to restore to your home to its original condition.

Prevent Fall Weather From Causing Damage To Your Home

10/4/2019 (Permalink)

fall leaves Taking just a few minutes to look around your property for potential hazards can prevent future water damage!

Fall has arrived and as such the leaves will be turning colors and falling from the trees! While the air is crisp and fresh, those leaves can bring hazards to your home that you need to pay special attention to. Leaves often fall in the gutter, which can create a potential water hazard as the weather systems change around us. Leaves can jam up in the gutters creating an overflow situation which can create water damage as the water backs up damaging the roofing material.

Another hazard to your home could be excessive groundwater that infiltrates the home from an improper drainage system. We recommend looking around your property to see where water could get into the home around the foundation.

When severe flooding or storms hit our area, take special caution around your home to maintain safety. Avoid walking through the storm waters, as hazards can be unseen. Watch for downed power lines and trees and maintain a safe distance from any perceived damage.

Call SERVPRO of Garden City/Hempstead for any water damage needs. Our team can quickly and accurately assess any damage to your home and take the proper course of action to repair it. We can be reached 24/7 at 516-620-4579. Call us today!

Preventing Water Damage - Inside and Outside

5/1/2019 (Permalink)

How To Prevent Sewage Backup

4/4/2019 (Permalink)

Unfortunately, few if any of the unpleasant consequences inherent in flood damage disappear without appropriate care and attention.

Pipe Insulation

3/8/2018 (Permalink)

One major cause of water damage is bursting pipes in the colder months. When a pipe freezes and then defrosts the water trapped inside will expand causing the pipe to burst as you can read about in our other blog post. Here we will discuss pipe insulation which will in turn prevent the freezing and bursting of pipes in winter time.

Pipe Wrap Insulation:

Pipe insulation has many benefits, one of which is its ability to minimize heat gain and loss. This benefit may very well be the most important. When water travels through pipes in a home without pipe insulation hot water will lose heat and cold water will gain heat. Pipe insulation will allow you to greatly diminish these otherwise inevitable inefficiencies. This could result in lowering monthly energy bills and you won’t need to wait as long for the hot water to reach fixtures in your bathroom! When surfaces of plumbing pipes are cooler than the surrounding air, insulation helps control the condensation. This could otherwise result in slowly corroding pipe. Though condensation may not seem like a major concern, it’s quite common particularly when cold water lines come in contact with warm air. There are many types of pipe insulation made of different materials. Some are more suitable for hot water and some for controlling condensation. Being there are so many types to choose from, each with a different purpose, be sure to do your research before installing. Asbestos is not uncommon in many older home pipe insulations. Asbestos insulation is not always easy to spot but has a distinct corrugated look. If you are suspicious be sure to contact a professional. Pipe insulation is almost never a bad idea and should be thoroughly looked into before attempting. The benefits of this procedure far outweigh any negative effects!

Water Stain Ceiling

3/8/2018 (Permalink)

Frozen Pipe Bursts

11/15/2017 (Permalink)

As winter fast approaches bursting water pipes are a major concern for many Long Islanders. As temperatures drop, pipes will freeze causing water molecules to expand. This causes water pressure within the pipe, which in turn leads to an eventual rupture from the buildup of pressure.

Protection and Prevention:

Below we will list some tips for preventing your pipes from freezing.

  • Drain water from pools and sprinklers. Unless directed, do not use antifreeze as it is environmentally harmful
  • Drain and store any hoses used outdoors. Allow water to drain out prior to storage.
  • Add insulation to spaces in your home such as basements, crawl spaces, and attics to maintain a higher temperature
  • Go through your home and property to make sure all hot and cold water pipes are properly insulated
  • Consider the installation of “heat tape”, “heat cable”, or “pipe sleeve” to help insulate and protect exposed pipes
  • If possible, consider relocating any exposed pipes to ensure proper insulation
  • When the temperature drops, run some water through exposed pipes. Even a small amount can prevent freezing
  • Keep your thermostat set to the same temperature day and night. The bill for a frozen pipe burst cleanup is likely much higher than a slightly higher heating bill
  • ***If you are going way, leave the heat on in your home no lower than 55 degrees

Thawing Pipes:

  • Run water through the pipe or at least open the faucet as any amount of water will help to thaw a frozen pipe
  • You can apply heat to a pipe by wrapping a heating pad around the affected area. Towels also work when soaked in hot water
  • Continue to apply heat until full water pressure is restored

If you find your pipes are frozen and you are unable to thaw them, we recommend you contact a licensed plumber. Should your pipes burst causing a water damage in your home or business do not hesitate to contact SERVPRO of Garden City/Hempstead at (516) 620-4579 as our experienced technician’s would be happy to help!!!
